Parvati with Ganesha Riding Nandi presents Shiva’s divine family travelling through a rocky Himalayan landscape. In the upper register, young Ganesha rides Nandi, accompanied by the mouse, tiger and peacock associated with the family’s different deities. Below, Parvati approaches Shiva, who carries Kartikeya on his shoulder, while an attendant moves alongside them with the travelling belongings.
This late 18th-century painting belongs to the Oir branch of the Pahari tradition. Rather than presenting the divine family formally enthroned, the artist shows them in motion—crossing an uneven landscape with their animals and companions. That narrative informality gives the sacred subject an unusually intimate, almost everyday quality.
The composition is built in two levels, connected by the movement of the figures and the rhythm of the grey mountain formations.
