About the artwork

Indra sent the storm to punish Vrindavan. Krishna lifted the hill.

In the upper register of this painting, the sky has turned to midnight indigo. Rain falls in fine silver lines. Gold lightning coils through black clouds. Winged storm spirits ride the wind, pouring water down, and Indra himself crosses the sky on Airavata, his white elephant, watching the village he came to destroy. Cranes flee ahead of the weather.

Below all of it, the rose-pink mass of Govardhan rises with a small white temple at its summit. Krishna stands at the centre in blue and gold, one arm raised, holding the hill above the entire world he has just saved.

And the world goes on beneath it. Gopis in crimson and gold. Gopas driving cattle. White and brown cows, calves, deer, a dog, a white elephant with a red saddle. Children walking with sticks. Two white towns visible at the left and right edges. Peacocks in the grass. A lotus pond running across the foot of the painting with cranes standing in the shallows. Nobody in the lower half is panicking. That is the point of the story, and the painter knew it.

This is Govardhan Dharan, one of the most beloved episodes in the Krishna canon and the reason Govardhan Puja is celebrated the day after Diwali. For the Pushtimarg tradition in particular, Giriraj Govardhan is not simply a hill in a story. It is Krishna himself.

Painted in the classical Rajasthani miniature tradition. The palette is exceptionally rich, deep emerald and olive across the ground, rose-pink in the hill, indigo and charcoal in the storm sky, with crimson, saffron, and gold running through every figure. Gold in the border and the lightning. The contrast between the violent sky and the calm green earth is the whole composition.

Produced as a museum-grade archival print on heavyweight 310 GSM cotton paper. Pigment inks rated for 100+ years of fade resistance. Every figure, every animal, the rain lines, the lotus pond, and the fine gold work are preserved with archival fidelity, with the full colour range of the original held true.

Best placed in a pooja room, particularly in a Pushtimarg or Vaishnava household where Giriraj holds daily significance. Equally powerful in a living room, a study, or an entrance hall. The vertical format suits a tall wall. The emerald and indigo palette holds against cream, lime-washed, and warm wood interiors, and the gold detail comes alive under a picture light.

For anyone searching for a serious Govardhan painting rather than a print-shop reproduction, this is the piece. It is the complete narrative, painted at full complexity.

Available in sizes from 8x12 to 30x40 inches. Framing optional. Larger sizes strongly recommended so the figures, animals, and storm detail read clearly.

Choose your size and bring Giriraj home.

FAQ

What scene does this painting show?
This is Govardhan Dharan, the episode where Krishna lifts Mount Govardhan on one finger to shelter the people and cattle of Vrindavan from a seven-day storm sent by Indra. Indra is visible in the upper sky on his white elephant Airavata, with storm spirits pouring rain around him.

Is this a good painting for Govardhan Puja?
Yes. Govardhan Puja is celebrated the day after Diwali and this is its central scene. The painting is an appropriate and considered piece for a pooja room, for Annakut celebrations, and as a Govardhan Puja or Diwali gift.

Is this suitable for a Pushtimarg or Vaishnava household?
Yes. Giriraj Govardhan holds particular devotional significance in the Pushtimarg tradition, where the hill is understood as a form of Krishna himself. This painting depicts the foundational episode of that devotion.

Is this a colourful Krishna painting?
Yes. Deep emerald and olive greens run across the ground, with rose-pink in the hill, indigo and charcoal in the storm sky, and crimson, saffron, and gold in the figures. Gold detailing appears in the lightning and the border. It is one of the richest colour compositions in the Rajasthani miniature tradition.

Is this a hand-painted original or a print?
This is a museum-grade archival print of a classical Rajasthani miniature painting. For hand-painted originals, write to the studio for current availability.

Where can I buy a Govardhan painting online?
Right here. Each print is produced in-house at Nakhrro on archival cotton paper, packed for archival pieces, and shipped with full tracking.

Is this an archival quality print?
Yes. Each print is produced on 310 GSM cotton-based archival paper using pigment inks rated for 100+ years of fade resistance, the same standard used by museums and serious collectors.

Does the print come framed?
Framing is offered as an add-on in select finishes. Choose framed or unframed at checkout. Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube.

What size should I order?
This painting holds a very large number of figures and animals. For the detail to read properly, 24x36 or 30x40 inches is strongly recommended. Smaller sizes work for study walls and gifting. For sizes beyond the listed range, custom sizing is available on request.

Is this suitable for gifting?
Yes. A Govardhan painting is among the most meaningful devotional gifts in the Vaishnava tradition, appropriate for Govardhan Puja, Diwali, Janmashtami, housewarmings, and weddings.

What materials are used?
310 GSM archival cotton paper and pigment-based inks. Framed versions use solid wood mouldings with acid-free mounting board. Anti-reflective glazing available on request.

How does shipping work?
Domestic India delivery takes 5 to 7 working days. International orders dispatched via FedEx with full tracking, packed with corner guards and moisture-resistant wrapping.

FAQ

Clear answers on authenticity, materials, framing, delivery and care.

What is the difference between a hand-painted original and a museum-grade print?

A hand-painted original is individually painted and carries brushwork and natural variation. A museum-grade print is a high-fidelity archival reproduction, available in more sizes at a more accessible price.

Should I choose archival paper or canvas?

Archival matte paper has a smooth, refined finish for crisp detail. Hahnemühle Daguerre Canvas has a fine woven texture and a more painterly presence.

Will the print fade or turn yellow?

Pigment inks and acid-free archival media are designed to remain fade-resistant for 80+ years under normal indoor display conditions and resist yellowing. Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight and moisture.

Is the frame included?

Only when you select a framed option. Unframed prints arrive securely rolled in a protective tube; framed artworks arrive safely packed and ready to hang.

Will the colours and dimensions be exactly as shown?

Every print is carefully colour-matched, although screens may show slight differences. We preserve the original composition, so final dimensions may vary slightly rather than cropping the artwork.

Can I order a custom size?

Selected artworks can be produced in custom sizes while preserving their proportions. Share your wall photo and measurements with us before ordering.

How is the artwork packed and when will it arrive?

Unframed prints: next working-day delivery in Mumbai and Bengaluru for orders placed before 1 p.m. IST. Orders placed at or after 1 p.m., on Sundays or on national holidays are processed on the next working day. Other Indian destinations: approximately 3–4 working days. Framed prints: approximately 15–20 working days. Sundays, Republic Day (26 January), Independence Day (15 August) and Gandhi Jayanti (2 October) are excluded. Use the PIN-code checker for an estimated arrival date. International orders: approximately 5–10 working days. Customs clearance and destination-country holidays may cause delays.

What if the artwork arrives damaged?

Made-to-order prints cannot be returned for a change of mind or incorrect size selection. Report transit damage with photographs or an unboxing video within 24 hours of delivery and we will resolve it promptly.
