About the artwork
Stillness at the centre. An entire cosmos in devotion around it.
Akshobhya — the “Immovable One” — is one of the Five Wisdom Buddhas of Vajrayana Buddhism. He represents mirror-like wisdom: the ability to see reality exactly as it is, undistorted by anger or aggression. His deep blue body symbolises the vast, unchanging nature of pure consciousness — infinite as the sky, unshaken by any storm.
In this extraordinary vintage Thangka, Akshobhya sits in serene meditation upon a multi-coloured lotus throne, draped in a richly patterned red and gold robe. His right hand reaches down in the Bhumisparsha mudra — the earth-touching gesture — the moment the Buddha called the earth itself to witness his enlightenment. His left hand rests in meditation in his lap, holding an invisible vajra.
A radiant white halo and elaborate crimson-gold aureole frame his form, creating a focal point of absolute calm amidst the vibrant activity surrounding him. Two standing Bodhisattva attendants — graceful, adorned, and serene — flank the Buddha on either side.
What makes this Thangka extraordinary is the celestial assembly that fills every remaining inch of the composition. Rows of arched niches — above, below, and on both sides — contain dozens of individually painted figures: seated Buddhas in various mudras, dancing dakinis, wrathful protectors, celestial Bodhisattvas, mounted guardians, and meditative deities. Each figure is a complete painting in miniature. Below the throne, a central lineage figure sits between two guardian lions, grounding the cosmic vision in earthly devotion.
The overall effect is of a single point of absolute stillness — Akshobhya — held within an entire universe of spiritual activity. It is a visual teaching on the nature of enlightenment itself: unshakeable peace at the centre of infinite complexity.
Who this artwork is for:
∙ Buddhist practitioners and students, particularly those drawn to the Akshobhya or Vajra family practices
∙ Meditation rooms, yoga studios, and therapy spaces — the deep blue palette creates profound calm
∙ Collectors of Himalayan and Asian sacred art
∙ Anyone seeking art with genuine spiritual depth and extraordinary visual complexity
∙ Spaces where you want a commanding centrepiece that rewards years of contemplation
The Five Wisdom Buddhas:
Akshobhya belongs to the Vajra (Diamond) family and presides over the eastern direction. He transforms the poison of anger into mirror-like wisdom. Displaying his image is traditionally believed to cultivate patience, clarity, and unshakeable inner peace.
The Bhumisparsha Mudra:
The earth-touching gesture depicted here is one of the most iconic moments in Buddhist art — it represents the moment Siddhartha Gautama, on the verge of enlightenment, was challenged by Mara (the embodiment of delusion) and called the earth itself to bear witness to his countless lifetimes of spiritual practice. The earth trembled in response, and Mara was defeated. It is a gesture of unshakeable truth.

FAQ
Clear answers on authenticity, materials, framing, delivery and care.
What is the difference between a hand-painted original and a museum-grade print?
A hand-painted original is individually painted and carries brushwork and natural variation. A museum-grade print is a high-fidelity archival reproduction, available in more sizes at a more accessible price.
Should I choose archival paper or canvas?
Archival matte paper has a smooth, refined finish for crisp detail. Hahnemühle Daguerre Canvas has a fine woven texture and a more painterly presence.
Will the print fade or turn yellow?
Pigment inks and acid-free archival media are designed to remain fade-resistant for 80+ years under normal indoor display conditions and resist yellowing. Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight and moisture.
Is the frame included?
Only when you select a framed option. Unframed prints arrive securely rolled in a protective tube; framed artworks arrive safely packed and ready to hang.
Will the colours and dimensions be exactly as shown?
Every print is carefully colour-matched, although screens may show slight differences. We preserve the original composition, so final dimensions may vary slightly rather than cropping the artwork.
Can I order a custom size?
Selected artworks can be produced in custom sizes while preserving their proportions. Share your wall photo and measurements with us before ordering.
