One of the most powerful and beloved scenes in all of Indian art — Krishna lifting Mount Govardhan to protect the people and animals of Vrindavan from the wrath of Indra, the god of rain.
In this vintage Pichwai, Lord Krishna stands at the centre, his blue skin radiant against the dark monsoon sky, effortlessly holding the great mountain aloft with one hand. Around him, the entire community has gathered for shelter — gopis clutching their children, cowherds guiding their cattle, and sacred cows pressing close to their divine protector. A devoted gopi fans him as he holds the weight of a mountain as lightly as a lotus.
The storm rages above — dark clouds fill the sky, white cranes fly through the rain, and lightning flickers in the distance. Yet beneath Krishna’s shelter, there is peace. The lower border of blooming lotuses in a tranquil pond creates a beautiful contrast — the calm that exists wherever Krishna is present, even in the midst of chaos.
The Govardhan Leela is not just a story. It is a promise — that devotion is always met with protection, and that grace can hold up even the heaviest burdens. This is why Govardhan Pichwais are considered deeply auspicious for homes, symbolising divine protection, community, and unwavering faith.
This vintage painting is reproduced as a museum-grade archival print, capturing the soft colour palette, delicate expressions, and fine brushwork of the original with complete fidelity.
