Kailasha Shankara presents Lord Shiva seated at the centre of his divine household on Mount Kailash, with Parvati and Ganesha beside him and Nandi resting in the foreground. Snow-covered Himalayan peaks frame the family, while two lions stand as guardians on either side of the throne.
This celebrated composition belongs to the chromolithographic legacy of Raja Ravi Varma and the Ravi Varma Press. By combining Indian sacred iconography with dimensional modelling, expressive faces and a richly coloured setting, such images transformed the visual language of Hindu deities and became an important part of Indian domestic and devotional culture.
The work shows Shiva not only as the ascetic Mahadev, but also as a protector, husband and father. Parvati represents Shakti and familial strength; Ganesha sits close to Shiva as the remover of obstacles; and Nandi embodies steadfast devotion. Together, the composition is traditionally associated with protection, harmony and stability within the home.
