Gangavataran (The Descent of Ganga) is a celebrated mythological composition by Raja Ravi Varma, reproduced by the Ravi Varma Press in 1890.

The work depicts the moment the celestial river Ganga descends to earth in response to King Bhagiratha’s penance. Because the force of her descent could overwhelm the world, Shiva receives the river in his matted hair and controls its powerful flow. Bhagiratha stands in prayer at the right, while Parvati watches from beside Nandi. Set against a vast Himalayan landscape, the composition gives the episode scale, clarity and dramatic movement.
