The one who is yet to come — seated in patience, radiating promise.

Maitreya is the Future Buddha — the next great teacher who, according to Buddhist tradition, will appear in our world when the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha have been forgotten, to turn the wheel of dharma once more and guide all beings toward enlightenment. He is the embodiment of loving-kindness itself — his name derives from the Sanskrit “maitri,” meaning boundless love.
In this exquisite vintage Thangka, Maitreya sits upon a lotus throne in full golden radiance, his hands held at his heart in the Dharmachakra mudra — the gesture of teaching, of setting the wheel of wisdom in motion. He wears an ornate five-pointed Bodhisattva crown, cascading jewellery, and flowing green robes that pool gracefully around him. Lotus stems bearing open flowers rise on either side, symbolising the purity and beauty that will mark his future arrival.

A magnificent double aureole — crimson inner, golden outer — frames his form against a deep lapis blue background that evokes the infinite sky of pure awareness. Two standing attendant Bodhisattvas flank the central figure with quiet devotion.

The surrounding composition is a celestial assembly — rows of Bodhisattvas, meditation deities, protectors, and enlightened figures seated in arched crimson niches, each painted with the same care and reverence as the central figure. Together, they form the spiritual universe that awaits Maitreya’s coming.

This is a painting about hope. About the promise that wisdom and compassion are not finished with this world. For anyone who finds meaning in that promise, this artwork carries it beautifully.

Understanding Maitreya:
Unlike most Buddhas who are depicted as monks, Maitreya is shown as a crowned, adorned Bodhisattva — because he has not yet achieved his final birth as a Buddha. He currently resides in Tushita Heaven, waiting for the right moment to descend. His teaching gesture signifies that his primary purpose is to share wisdom — he is, above all, a teacher.

The Dharmachakra Mudra:
Both hands held at the heart, fingers forming circles — this is the gesture of turning the wheel of dharma, the act of teaching the path to liberation. It is the gesture Shakyamuni Buddha used in his first sermon at Sarnath, and it is the gesture Maitreya will use when he arrives to teach again.
