The image that defined how India sees its goddess of wealth.

This is arguably the most recognised painting of Goddess Lakshmi ever created. Raja Ravi Varma’s depiction of the four-armed goddess — standing upon a blooming red lotus, draped in a crimson and gold saree, holding lotuses in her upper hands while her lower hands offer blessings and abundance — became the definitive image of Lakshmi for an entire nation.

Two white elephants (Gajas) stand on either side, their trunks raised, pouring water in an act of celestial abhishekam. Lotus flowers float across the golden waters around her. The composition is a masterclass in combining European oil painting technique with Indian devotional iconography — Lakshmi’s face is painted with Ravi Varma’s signature luminous realism, yet her four arms and divine attributes are unmistakably Hindu.

When Ravi Varma established his lithographic press in 1894, this image became one of the most widely reproduced prints in Indian history. It entered millions of homes, shops, and temples. If you have ever seen a calendar print of Lakshmi in an Indian home or business — it traces its visual lineage directly to this painting.
This is the painting that lives in India’s collective memory. Now available as a museum-grade archival print that honours the original with the quality it deserves — not a faded calendar print, but a fine-art reproduction on acid-free paper with archival pigment inks.

Vastu significance:
Lakshmi is the ultimate Vastu deity for wealth, prosperity, and abundance. This Gajalakshmi form — with elephants performing abhishekam — is considered the most powerful Lakshmi image for attracting financial prosperity. Ideal placement: north wall of your living room, office entrance, cash counter area, or pooja room. Traditionally displayed during Diwali and Dhanteras for maximum auspiciousness.
